Pandora gets commercials

How far is too far when it comes to inserting commercials? It's a tough line to ride, between generating revenue and alienating your viewers. Pandora is trying something new that, according to a few Pandora fans, is pushing it just a little too far.

Pandora isn't new to screen ads but, inserting them into the stream of music is something they've not tried. In the words of one blogger, "short commercials are now playing in the audio stream, as in this case here for McDonald's Dollar Value menu. This change has the opposite effect - I now know exactly who is keeping me from hearing my music, both visually and via audio, and casts a negative light on both Pandora and the advertiser."

Pandora is an interesting project but, I've always wondered exactly how they planned to make real money to support themselves. If I had any word of advice for Pandora's commercial endeavors, it would be to keep the ads in an underwriter format, rather than a full on commercial bonanza. Think NPR Pandora, not Hot 97.
