When you have it all, what more do you want? For Jay-Z, having come up from young rapper to President and CEO of Def Jam, maybe all you want is a return to what got you where you are; hit records.
Unfortunately, second week sales of Jay-Z's new album "Kingdom Come" aren't good. In fact, for a multi-platinum artist, they're downright abysmal. Bob Lefzetz writes, "According to hitsdailydouble, Jay-Z sold 133,146 records last week, a whopping drop of 81%. In other words, ALL BETS ARE OFF! Turns out the old paradigm of tie in with everybody, get on every TV show, there's no such thing as overexposure, is trumped by the TRULY old paradigm, as in YOU NEED A HIT! And Jay-Z just didn't deliver one."
Lefsetz continues by hammering home his point, what brought to complain about 850k records sold in two weeks is the relentless quest for first week blockbusters. Record companies rely on the mega-hit to stay above water, it's a risky strategy much like the movie studios employ; Spend big to make big. Jay-Z's "Kingdom Come" is preparing to take its place in history, right next to a steaming pile of Kevin Costner movies.

1. He's right. Kingdom Come, like other pop albums, isn't going anywhere without a radio hit or some other similar exposure (like a hit show on the Disney Channel). This should bring an end to the belief that the Internet has rendered terrestrial radio impotent. Nothing -- NOTHING -- sells albums like a radio hit, and it *still* is a prerequisite for a hit album. Before somebody rebuts by name droping Gnarls Barkley: They got a lift from the Internet, but radio played the heck out of "Crazy."
Is it any wonder labels will make a deal with the devil, if necessary, to get radio play? It's about impossible to top the charts without it. Beyonce and Fergie were slipping before they got a big push at radio. Then they climbed back up the chart.
Jay-Z's first week was aided by Black Friday, so that should be taken into consideration. It was going to drop. Had the first week not included Black Friday, the second-week drop would not have been as great.
