Universal Music Group has thrown down the gauntlet, suing MySpace for copyright infringement just days after UMG CEO Doug Morris called all iPod owners, "thieves" and only weeks after finagling a deal to receive $1 per Zune sold, under the auspices of recovering "lost revenue" due to all this wacky 3x3 sharing. The suit accuses MySpace of, "allowing users to upload videos illegally and taking part in the infringement by re-formatting the videos to be played back or sent to others"UMG and MySpace had been in talks to compensate UMG for any use of its intellectual property on the popular social networking site but, talks reportedly broke down on Thursday and UMG decided to go for the jugular and sue. For its part, MySpace says it has DMCA compatible takedown procedures in place.
Glenn Coolfer says, "How much anti-piracy effort is enough?" The answer from UMG appears to be, there's never enough, as long as the threat of a copyright infringement suit can gain advantage at the negotiation table, UMG will never be satisfied.
