NPR on Barenaked Ladies unconventional indie marketing

NPR's Day to Day takes a look at the Barenaked Ladies controversial decision to allow fan-driven remixes of a song from their new album. We at TDMW love BNL for having the guts to go indie, start their own label and exploit the power of the internet to market their new album but, some industry watchers have been a bit skeptical of the band's approach. Certainly, you wouldnt' see a major label taking the sorts of interesting risks -- such as selling the source tracks for six songs from a major artist's album for just 2.49 each -- but, that's just what BNL have done.

The NPR segment is just 5 minutes but, does an exceptional job of giving neophytes an intro to remix culture. Plus, Steven Page and Ed Robertson talk about their favorite fan submitted remixes, how the fan remixes are better than many professionally done versions and, joke openly about "getting back at the fans" by exploiting their free labor.

On a side note about BNL, here in Canada, Outdoor Life Network is running a reality show with Ed Robertson called, "Ed's Up." The show's producers send Ed -- a licensed private pilot -- flying all around Canada to do some of the worst and most strange jobs in the land. I've seen two episodes so far and, I'm completely hooked. Recorded this summer, episodes fo the show find Ed planting trees in the Yukon, working at a sawmill in Labrador and cutting trees in Nova Scotia.
