IFPI rats on 30, one convicted

The IFPI reported 30 individuals to Swedish police for making available what it calls "large quantities" of music to the general public through file-sharing. Out of those 30, one was chosen for prosecution by Swedish authorities and, as of today that one person has been sentenced to a fine of SEK 20,000 (2,161 EUR).

What might surprise you is that, in this case, "large quantities" translates to four tracks. Far be it from me to get involved in Swedish politics but, I imagine there are scads of more important things the Swedish authorities could have done with the time, effort and cost associated in tracking down, charging and prosecuting one person for sharing four files.

Big Brother The IFPI claims a victory anyway, "This is a victory for copyright and we are naturally pleased that there was a conviction. Copyright is the foundation on which the whole music industry is based. For the industry to continue to grow and for consumers to have access to a wider range of music services, such as via the internet or their mobile phones, clear and effective copyright protection is essential", says Ludvig Werner, Chairman of IFPI Sweden.

No wonder the Pirate Party have managed to gain a foothold. Read the IFPI's press release.
