What's happening at AllofMp3? A mysterious press conference held by AllofMp3 scheduled for today, and Russian papers reporting that Russia's long standing piracy issues with the WTO are over but, so far no word or action from AllofMp3 or Russian authorities.
According to the Moscow Times, German Economic Development and Trade Minister Gref said Friday that piracy worries were no longer holding up U.S. talks on Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization and expressed hope for a deal by the end of October.
I was unable to gain access to the AllofMp3 press conference scheduled for 11:30 today, and I don't think I was alone. Any word from on high at AllofMp3 typically gains immediate notice from the blog-o-sphere and, as of 1PM Eastern there's still no mention of any press details to be found. This paragraph from the press conference release gives a hint as to what might have been on the agenda, "Mediaservices is convinced that its business model is legitimate and that it maximizes demand for music and spurs consumers to buy more music. The company believes that everyone wins -- record labels, artists and distribution companies -- when the market is broader and deeper. Relying on a handful of artists for the majority of sales is an outdated business model and recipe for disaster for the music industry." A quote that sounds much like the press release equivalent of a schoolyard taunt.
I think everyone is aware that every second which passes is one second closer to the end of AllofMp3 as we know it. The US government, the RIAA and the BPI have all made it pretty clear that they want the service shut down. With Russia at the end stages of begging its way into the WTO, and in desperate need of any economic shot in the arm it can get, it's pretty hard to imagine any situation in which AllofMp3 could come out victorious. So, where's the news?
