I'm openly doubting the fortunes of SpiralFrog but, it's signing deals left and right. Last week they dropped on to the scene with a deal to publish content from Universal, which made headlines across the world, caused some pundits to doubt the future of Napster, and caused me to wonder whether musicians will ever see a penny from music circulated through the new service. Back again, with a deal to publish content from EMI. This brings artists like Kanye West, Sting, Nelly Furtado and Jay Z to the table, but it doesn't change my point of view.
"It is a very exciting concept which fuses advertising with music downloads and other services to recapture consumer demand which has been hijacked by online piracy," said Roger Faxon, Co-CEO of EMI Music Publishing.
Oh please Faxon, you must be kidding me? The consumer demand exists, you're just failing to package product in a way and at a price point that works. And, even when you do find something that works, your first instinct is to raise the price.
The service will launch before end of year, and more deals are expected to be announced.

1. I see SpiralFrog lasting about as long as BurnLounge and that's not saying much.
Hell, I'd be signing deals all day if I were paying the labels $2 million dollars up front but beyond that, that doesn't make it a viable business.
Free is nice, but free without restrictions - that would be something to talk about.
