Looks like all those rumors were, well, rumors.
Jobs' keynote at WWDC didn't include any mention of iTunes or the iPod, say nothing of the rumored iPhone that was supposed to save apple from mp3 and mobile phone convergence.
I've read all the hype over the last month. You can recognize one of these articles immediately by the way the closing paragraph begins :
- "Apple needs to ..."
- "Apple has to..."
- "If Apple doesn't..."
The bottom line, and the lesson to take away from all this failed rumor mongering? Apple doesn't have to do anything, at least not right now. The iPod is dominant and that means Apple sets the tone for the market. Other manufacturers have failed to best the ease of use and simplicity of the iPod, and until they do (with or without a phone attached) it's unlikely that Apple will lose its championship belt in the world of mobile media.
1. OS X Leopard looks pretty sweet, but yes, I was disappointed in the lack of iTunes, iPod, or iPhone news. Hopefully, the Apple Expo in September will bring us some cool stuff. When do we begin recycling the rumors? I want better fake iPhone pics this time around.
