Wireless portable player, the UWB theory

iPod going UWB wireless?Mark Hachman of PC Magazine has obviously spent a notable amount of time thinking about wireless options and portable music players like the iPod.

With Microsoft poised to release a portable player, with rumored wi-fi capabilities, its a near-certainty that Apple will have to respond with more innovation. Competition is good for markets, and Microsoft's entry into the portable media space is no different. But how will Apple compete?

"Microsoft can bludgeon its way into many markets, but I doubt that a Microsoft-branded player will have a significant impact unless it can tie itself to the PC in a way that's either revolutionary, extremely simple, and distinct from Apple's efforts. Of course, the Trojan horse in this effort may in fact be the Xbox, as our gaming site, 1UP, has suggested."

Hachman says a UWB (Ultra Wide Band) enabled iPod could be the ticket. Wireless synchronization with the Mac or PC without all that pesky interaction with the other iPods around you. He's probably closer to correct than not.
