DefectiveByDesign Organizes Nationwide DRM Protest

Protests were expected today in front of several U.S. Apple retail stores against FairPlay DRM that prevents iTunes Music Store customers from selling, trading or otherwise transferring ownership of music purchased through the digital music retailer.

The grass roots group DefectiveByDesign.org has caused controversy within the on-line Community with their high profile events that have seen Hazmat suit wearing protesters targeting high-tech companies for distributing defective products containing DRM.

Protesters were expected at Apple retail stores in at least 7 major cities Saturday morning, among them Seattle, San Francisco and Chicago.

As of 2 p.m. Eastern, details of any actual protests were unavailable online. I was able to find one first hand account of the scene at the Cambridge, MA store, which described a heavy police presence at 10:45 am, but no actual protesters to be found. The protests were widely publicized around the blogosphere yesterday, with 800lb Gorilla of blogs, Boing Boing listing the Cambridge store as a protest target.

Was the Apple DRM protest a bust? Let us know! Post links to blogs that covered the events in their local area, or any flickr streams you find of actual protest pictures. It's a shame to think DefectiveByDesign was unable to muster support from a sizable number of DRM activists.

Update:
This blog entry doesn't give a location but is a funny read nonetheless. From the post, "having already paid a stop to the local Fedex Kinkos ™ to attain our package of Anti-DRM propaganda we proceed to Home Depot ™. From there we purchase a few classy dipsticks, typically used for paint testing. Today they would be used for justice."
