BitTorrent For Dummies

There is hardly a clearer sign that a technology, service, or product has become mainstream than its inauguration as a "...For Dummies" title. Susannah Gardner, author of Buzz Marketing with Blogs For Dummies, has her BitTorrent For Dummies released today (co-authored with Kris Krug). As a long-time "...For Dummies" author with several books in that series, I can testify that the editorial decision makers there are always interested in new ideas, but can be conservative in what they actually publish. Publication of a how-to about a file-sharing protocol is a bit of an eye-opener, and was probably facilitated by BT's and Bram Cohen' clean reputations, no matter how the thing is actually used. That said, it's perhaps worth noting that the book's companion blog links to a Bit Torrent download of every Daily Show broadcast in September. Here is the blurb at Amazon: "There's certainly a torrent of interest in BitTorrent! But while it enables you to download all kinds of cool files and to distribute your own creative efforts, it also carries some risks. This book not only shows you how to acquire BitTorrent, but also how to use it without picking up worms, viruses, and lawsuits." See the Table of Contents (PDF) here.
