MP3 subscription service eMusic has launched new recommendation features powered by ChoiceStream, a personalization technology developer. ChoiceStream claims to understand why people choose the music they choose, and to extrapolate new choices from that information. eMusic is presenting ChoiceStream technology in various ways that churn up the massive eMusic catalog. This is bound to be a good thing no matter the quality of the recommendation engine, and so far I'm seeing reasonably relevant (and always interesting) content surfaced onto my screen. Each member's Home page, and every genre page, is now enhanced with new recommendations. Additionally, eMusic is bolstering its editorial content, or at least the visibility of it, by highlighting its superb columns and introducing "Dozens"—these are lists of 12 essential tracks in various subgenres like piano jazz, post-rock, Grime, and Music of the Balkans. Damn, the site is looking fine these days. Tell me eMusic isn't the coolest online service around. I love Rhapsody for its jukeboxy nature, but I would take eMusic's catalog if I had to choose. iTMS? Ever veering toward irrelevance. eMusic? Ever more essential.
eMusic Overhauls Its Surfacing Engine

I joined eMusic.com near the begining of this year, and have not only enjoyed finding old and new recordings I already knew of, but discovering artists and music I never knew of though their site.
They've been working on increasing the pathways through the site this year, as you can now move through the categories and groupings in every way possible. Anything that is correlational, is linked to a drill down or out query. This is key in categorical collection of content. Categories should be there, but they aren't the lines on the road.
Now with this ChoiceStream engine serving up suggestions, it should hopefully introduce me to even more music. Although, my listening habits are all over the place - so I'm interested in seeing how well it will perform. I presume they fed this engine w/ all my buying history and save list, so they should have enough data to work with.
Yes, eMusic is one of the coolest music sites - and I'm extreemly picky when it comes to a music service :)
Hasta,
Gideon
