iTunes 5 adoption isn't going smoothly. I haven't had any trouble myself, with installation or limited use of the
upgraded program. Dana Blankenhorn at Corante
reports
widespread and serious problems, including general computer trashing in Windows machines, and cites
Lauren Weinstein: "What's worse, rolling back [to 4.9]
can be difficult or impossible, and Apple's lack of official recognition or public response regarding these problems is
driving many users up the wall. I've personally now seen two systems that have fallen into this black hole — no working
iTunes, no working QuickTime, and attempts to install older versions (even just of QuickTime) fail miserably, even
after complex (and in some cases dangerous) attempts at cleaning out the leftover muck. It's really a mess — reminds me
of early DOS days."
Reports of destroyed iTMS libraries are floating around the Apple boards, though it's hasrd to know whether files have
actually gone missing, or simply can't be viewed by people whose only interface with their music has been iTunes. Many
(perhaps all) of the issues seem to be related to Bonjour, a program offered/bundled by Apple which facilitates setting
up networks. Many people in Apple's discussion forums are citing a Bonjour error before the crashing and apparent
destruction of playlists begins. This
thread offers a detailed solution that seems to be working for some people.

23. I can't burn songs after upgrading to v5. 4.9 worked just fine. Nero still works fine. The problem is the version 5. Where can I get 4.9? Seems it's very hard to find.

24. I had nothing but problems. I was using 4.9 on windows XP with no problems and then I decided to upgrade to 5.0. I was also hit with you will loose you QT key, but I decided that's okay the installtion appeared to go through smoothly untill I tried to run iTunes which I got the error 2093 quicktime not availabe or something to that effect. I tried installing quicktime 7 standalone and it errored out saying unable to uninstall previous version. Basically after several days I found out it corrupted a bunch of registry settings. Way to go Apple. How do you expect to win over windows users when you put out crap software.

26. I found 4.9 available here:
http://www.freedownloads.be/downloaddetail/570-iTunes-4.9
You'll have to uninstall 5 before you can install 4.9.

27. They shouldve made it more clear about that 'bonjour' thing, my firewall gave me a notice about it so, thinking it was spyware (i thought that if it was a apple thing it would be something more like iBonjour)now bonjour is blocked from my system, meaning no iTunes and i cant install the older ones, this is truly a disaster, Even from the screenshots ive seen the new 'look' looks terrible and the reviews ive read sound like its terrible. Next ill have to remember to read reviews before downloading.

28. i installed itunes 5 (under winxp sp2) thinking that i would have a fabulous new version. After the install, it worked fine and i liked it.
BUT HOWEVER, after a reboot, neither itunes or quicktime will open and i am stuck at what to do.
i USED to trust apple and itunes especially. what a F#@%ing pile of s**#!!!!!!! they have made this into. 2006 will be the year of going fully open source for me!

"everytime i listen to a song now and then update my iPod, it will recopy the songs that i've listened to as if i made a change to the file....jeez"
Has anyone else noticed this??
Any song that is partially played in itunes 5 (ie: not played to the end which increments the play count), which you haven't played in itunes 5 before, gets updated onto your ipod even though no info has been changed! What exactly is apple updating about our songs???
The new look is butt-ugly too, should have stuck with 4.9

31. I have found two problems with iTunes5. (WXP sp2)
1) Something in the install actively prevented my BT Voyager 2100 Router from doing lookups! See
http://www.voyager.bt.com/2100/produpdates.htm for details.
Secondly, when I attempted to uninstall iTunes5 it failed on Quicktime and I can now neither repair it, or go back to itunes 4.9. The problem seems to be around Quicktime. The iTunes5 install fails before it gets to the Quicktime install - and as Quicktime is no longer provided as a seperate install I have no way of installing/uninstalling/repairing it. I attempted to do a Systems Restore but this left me with a non-functioning version of iTunes4.9 which claims that my Quicktime files are corrupt. Apple have lost all my confidence. I was about to buy a Mac Mini but will not do that now until I can get this mess of crapshit sorted out. Apple need to provide a fix and quickly!
32. It seems to partially delete my music library. Some of my files were transported to work via my iPod. It seems that all files that were temporarily located on an iPod are no longer in my music library. They stayed in the library but the physical files got deleted during the install or initial library update.
Did anyone else notice this?

33. Warning to those who have W2K.
I downloaded and installed iTunes 5 on my W2K box at home. It trashed my OS so it couldn't boot and totally corrupted my registry.
I had to reinstall Windows... but since my registry was trashed and I can't find many of my original disks, my apps cannot startup correctly. They're there but Windows doesn't see them.
Sucks. Totally sucks.
Do not load iTunes on W2k. You have been warned.

34. I burned a playlist and when I reinserted the disc to print the contents it showed only track numbers. This is a very quirky version of itunes and quite troublesome, 3 thumbs down on this release.

35. Not to mention that you have to have the newest ipod update to load your purchased music on to you ipod. Also it automatically goes to CDDB and gets track names, I will do that myself thank you very much. iTunes 5 into trash, welcome back iTunes 4.9! Apple is getting more like Microsoft all the time.

36. I downloaded iTunes 5.0, now nothing works. iTunes doesn't recognize my iPod, says I need to reinstall the software. I've done that, along with everything it says to do on the troubleshooting page of Apple site, spent a total of 6 hours over 3 days on the phone with Apple tech support, and the guy tells me it's a unique problem and he thinks it's my machine! Considering TONS of posters to this and other sites are having the exact same problem, how could it be my machine? iTunes will launch, but it doesn't recognize the iPod and when I try to launch the iPod update 9-23-05, I get "iPod Service Error". So basically I've got a $300 paperweight. I'm ready to cry.....

Yes. I have a collection of about 6,000 songs and after installing iTunes 5 I lost about 300 of them. The lost mp3's are still listed in the library and the files appear to be in the music folder but they can no longer be opened.

38. I am new to iPODS and geez what an introduction. I install 4.9 from the CD then after it pops up saying update to v5, which I do, from then on hassle after hassle. error 2093 not matter what I tried (I use win XP)
Finally got back to v4.9 after a lot of work. It auto syncs my music to my Nano but out of 6gig of music on my PC only 1.5gig is transfered to the Nano - what gives???
I think Apple should employ some people that actually have a bit of experience with PCs :( sad first intro to Apple!!!

39. I had this same problem where I did the 'automatic update' on mac os X and then iTunes and Quicktime wouldn't open. I tried for about 7 hours to fix it then I came across a forum where someone said if you are using ProTools you need to update your CoreAudio driver. 5 Minutes later and an upgrade from 6.4 to 6.5.2 and all was well again in my world. So to try it just go to www.digidesign.com and download the new coreaudio driver for your system.
Unfortunately, if this doesn't work you may be SOL. There was a post on Macosx.com where you have to make sure that the iTunes Helper application is loading on startup. Go to your system preferences/users/YOURUSERID then check to make sure it loads. This didn't fix anything for me, but the coreaudio upgrade did. Good luck!

40. I too had the error 2093 on XP. After trying about everything under the sun, I tried this and it worked for me:
Uninstalled quicktime
uninstalled itunes
that forced a reboot
then ran 'tweaknow regcleaner' (downloaded free from windows support) and it cleaned the mess left behind (told me which ones were safe to delete)
then reinstalled the quicktime 7 package with itunes bundled and it all came back including playlists. I hope it stays that way.
