Apple has invited reporters to a press conference on September 7, hinting at what John Borland calls a "major announcement." Video iPod? Apple has been clearing licenses to video content for iTunes, but that doesn't mean Steve Jobs suddenly believes in portable video. A big flash iPod? The Motorola iTunes phone? Let the rumor-mongering rule.
UPDATE: That was a short window of opportunity for rumor-mongering, if the NY Times is correct. Matt Richtel reports that the announcement will be the Motorola phone. After the multiple, seemingly endless delays getting this thing to market, a splashy press fest seems almost embarrassing.
UPDATE: More sources are speaking up to the WSJ (subscription required) and PC World, indicating that in addition to the iTunes/Motorola phone, Apple might announce a line of flash-based Mini iPods. The phone might and might not have an online component connecting to some kind of online store co-branded by Apple and Cingular, the phone's sponsor. Certainly, the phone will interface with computers and accept file transfers.

1. What a great report, brad.
