Un-be-lievable. In a press release following the simultaneous release of Sith in theaters and file-sharing networks, MPAA head Dan Glickman was quoted referring to "BitTorrent providing users with illegal copies of Revenge of the Sith." He said it damaged the magic of movies. This is wrong on so many levels; we'll just touch on a few. The main point is that, ultimately, Bit Torrent cannot "provide" anything; it merely facilitates transfer and shifts bandwidth loads. This is not hair-splitting. the copy of Sith was provided by some anonymous industry insider who leaked a production copy. Isn't this where the MPAA should be tightening the screws? As to the magic of movies, there is no less magic in the Internet and frictionless file-sharing. Unauthorized content remains unauthorized because the industries (music, movies, TV) refuse to consider alternate distribution channels (notwithstanding heavily DRM'd music services) or licensing models.
