I'm dating mysefl by getting excited about this, but 1970s-era computer builder Commodore is back (at least in brand name, now owned by Yeahronimo Media Ventures in the Netherlands) with a flash MP3 player and data carrier. The MPET II player comes in 256MB and 512MB sizes, both of which feature an FM tuner, voice recording, and non-music data storage. Accepted music files are MP3 and WAV—skipping the secure-WMA bandwagon for now. An e-mail press release indicates that the CommodoreShop site will develop some kind of music distribution service supporting downloads directly to the device. Holy smokes—Commodore taking on Apple? My life is flashing before my eyes.

1. The author must have been thinking about old the old Commodore 64 (i.e., with 64k of memory) when writing this. I assume (or I would hope) he meant 256M and 512M sizes. 256k would be pretty short mp3 track.
