A nice investigative piece by Andrew Tan in The Daily Texan walks the reader through the experience of being sued in a "John Doe" lawsuit by the RIAA. Mr. Tan pretends he has bee subpeonaed, and follows the steps available to someone in that situation. He ends up on the phone with a settlement broker who gives hiom the hard sell on settling, NOW. Tan also does a little arthmetic, and figures that if all of the approximately 8,500 lawsuits initiated by the RIAA end up settled for an average amount of $3,000, the music industry will collect over 25-million dollars. One can't help wondering how much of that windfall will go to musicians, and by what heretofore undisclosed procedure.

(Page 1)2. None of it will go to musicians. Absolutely none of it. It's not covered in the musicians contracts, and RIAA members will not dish out money that they don't have to dish out. The lawsuits are not stopping music fans from downloading. The majors aren't really losing money to pirates -- they're losing market share to independents. CDBaby sales are doubling year over year.
They're just padding their own bank accounts -- NOT acting in the interest of the artists.
