A significant upgrade to the popular Musicmatch Jukebox desktop music player is at hand. (PC Magazine's review is here.) The program is cosmetically more attractive than previous versions, in my opinion, with clearer window borders, buttons, and displays. As always, a free version is balanced by a 20-dollar commercial version with important feature activations (recording from the computer mixer, for example). A new MP3 tagging system, always a program strength, has been enhanced and simplified. Musicmatch is dedicated to music, and doesn't dabble with movies, photos, etc. Various subscription tiers provide access to on-demand DJ'ing, and there is an online doewnload store. the various subscription and purchase options are all a bit confusing: MM would do well to clear up that tangle at some point, but the truth is that the company innovates like nobody else and the on-demand services are excellent. Musicmatch loyalists are a fierce bunch, and with good reason.
Musicmatch Jukebox 10 Released
Reader Comments
(Page 2)22. Musicmatch 10 just released a new update today. Of course they don't tell you what if anything was fixed in this release; but we can hope they're making it more stable.

23. I just upgraded to MMJ Plus version 10 and HATE it! I don't use the streaming features or auto DJ so I don't care about those upgrades. I do however require good usability and this version sucks! For example, if I pop in a CD for ripping, it automatically shows me the tracks in the main view (v9.0 showed the track listings only in the 'Now Playing view in the upper right corner). I now have to scroll back and forth between library (my main viewpoint) and CD. Once I rip from CD, again, I'm presented only with this view, not the main library with indications to the newly added tracks (a feature I really liked in v9.0). There are also annoying scroll over pop ups with duplicate info (like track length, format, etc.) which obscure my view of the library track listing. The dark background with white font is eye-straining. Wrost of all, my CD's seem to burn SLOWER now. The program also loads slower (I'm running WinXP on a freakin' Dell Inspiron XPS!!), constantly fights with my MacAfee firewall and Internet Security protocols, and many tracks don't play from CD, advancing the song skips to the next track. So now I must investigate this? I don't buy sw to incur trouble shooting effort! The thing I hate the most is the MM customer "support". No response in 3 days! So, when I read comments about not supporting iPod, this proves to me that this company is resting on their accomplishments and that product reviewers are techies who are way too close to the products to recall fundamental requirements like usability and work flow. I mean, have you seen these reviews. Great new features! Yeah, great, but at the expense of the core feature set. I work in software and one of the things I hate the most about our industry is this relentless drive to add new crap instead of making the core feature set simpler, easier to use. Alas, I don't have time to f around with MMJ 10, offensively remiss customer suport, or even take the time to revert to the old version (if I knew how). I'm switching to anything else. I've already paid for MMJ Plus, so I can compare other sw at no risk of things getting worse. If version 9 works for you, DO NOT UPGRADE TO VERSION 10!

24. You folks that are streaming music using MusicMatch version 9, are you able to stream the radio stations and stations you have created? If so, how do you do it please?
Thanks

25. After reading all of this, I'm sticking with version 9. I couldn't get 10 to load on my machine so MM's 'user support' directed me to the ver 9 download. Thats telling in its own right. That said, I can't get ver 9 to recognize my iPod. Can anyone tell me where I can get the plugin? Its not listed on their site as a supported device.

27. I just tried to install MM 10, and it is a joke. The "logging and tracing manager" (the name sounds like spyware) keeps crashing, and everytime I boot it opens a "common" folder in Explorer.
When I finally got it to run, I couldn't get it to rip a CD or to play an MP3 file I had without the whole thing crashing. When I restarted it, it reopened the "Radio" that I had closed, apparently to make certain I see the ads (this despite the fact I paid good money for the "Plus" version).
I'm going back to version 9 for now, now that I finally got it to uninstall after dealing with dozens of crashes of the "logging and tracing manager" thing, and I'll wait for the next version to come out. If the next version is no better, I will be switching to something else. Such shoddy programming is simply inexcusable.

28. I was shocked to hear that Musicmatch 10 wouldn't support my Ipod. I went online to search for a work around and found an article on how to make it work. I did as it said and now my Ipod works fine with version 10. Now for the bad news, I didn't save the page where I found the info and I can't remember what it told me to do. I can assure you that your Ipod can work flawlessly with Musicmatch 10, mine does. I didn't load Itunes or Microsoft media player so that may be why mine works.

29. I have Musicmatch 8.2 (still, thank god for System Restore). Tried twice to install 10. First time it did not load/install completely and I did a system restore. However I still get the annoying popup window telling me to upgrade to 10. Therefore I tried again. Even worse the second time, MMJB 10 destroyed my internet connection settings (I have Charter Pipeline) and would not load completely. SYSTEM RESTORE AGAIN.
NO MORE MMJB 10. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me!
How do you disable the annoying popup window telling you to upgrade?
8.2 serves my purposes just fine.

30. By the way, I do have Windows Media Player 10, I Tunes and Winamp (so I can read unusual audio formats such as OGG files). Maybe there are too many conflicts between MMJB 10 and these programs - incompatibility issues.

31. At least some of you got MM10 to run. I "upgraded" from 9 yesterday and it just hangs, with a little message saying that it's trying to update components. That's if I click on the icon, or if tries to autoplay from a loaded CD.
Tried to load ver. 9 on an old Win98 system - good enough for ripping, and it won't load - can't access a DLL library.

32. I loved Version 9, I really did, and when the Oportunity arose to upgrade to Version 10 I just dived straight in... I would have been better off diving into a swimming pool with the water removed... First off. Why can't I have multiple Libraries... I truly want to keep my Classical Library apart from my Popular Library... Secondly, I (and a gazillion other users) am having problems with the Mmdiag.exe program that loads (or should load) with this version... Has the thing not been tested.... I could go on, but why bother... Stick with version 9 my friends, at least until some major bug fixes take place.. or if you wish to retain multiple libraries.

33. "Posted Mar 9, 2005, 5:05 AM ET by Bill
I was tired of the "Tracing and Logging Mangager" continually crashing on my XP laptop. So I've hidden the file (mmdiag.exe) in both the MusicMatch and MusicMatch Update folders by adding a, "z_" to the begining of the file and have since had no problems. In fact, the program now responds faster."
This is an excellent solution, MM10 working without any problems now

34. Sorry, but if the purpose of this blog is to find a solution to the disappointment of the constant crashing of MusicMatch 10, then "Bill" has hit the nail on the head here. Renaming the MMDiag files to z_MMDiag really does work!

35. I could not agree more with Eddie Davis' comments (post number 1). However, I think he was being kind by saying that it was an "oversight" by Musicmatch to not inform users they no longer support iPod, the largest selling mp3 player. They seem to email you about On-Demand and their latest features quite easily. Yes, I too got burned by buying lifetime upgrades and, a few months later, found out they no longer supported the iPod plug-in. Just enough time went by so I couldn't get a refund. (They emailed me repeating their company policy on refunds.)
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT ON THIS ISSUE!

36. Super-tagging is the only good thing left about MusicMatch. I am so sad to see my good friend MusicMatch die in this way. I loved it for about 4 years, but it has been replaced by iTunes. If iTunes ever implements any feature similar to super-tagging, there will be a mass exodus from MusicMatch (heck, that's already happening because of the iPod debacle).

37. question, does mm jukebox 8.2 support the ipod mini, or the dell pocket dj? i'd like to buy either one, but 8.2 is outdated.

38. Stay away from Version 10. It's not ready for Primetime. Version 10 keeps losing track of my Library. One day all 1400 songs are there; the next, only 344 (the tracks are still on the hard drive, but you have to tell MM to go find them). Also in v10, I lost the ability to buy music from the MM store.. said I no longer had "rights." I guess I have the "right" to spend my money somewhere else... and I will.

39. I LOVED the Musicmatch verion 9. Got a new computer not too long ago. After installing 10, the damn thing would let me download track. There a pop-up modal window that ask to confirm or cancel, and it just hangs. This really sucks.

40. I to fell into the MM 10 trap. I upgraded to version 10, somehow I lost ALL of my licenses to music I purchased for MM. I tried a couple things to see if they were there. even purchased a song for 99 cents. Ha!!! I coulnd't even listen to it. The license failed to download. good luck with customer support. I've had more luck with asking the two monkeys humping a football in my front yard.

21. Musicmatch 10 has been a terrible experience from start to finish. I've had constant and ongoing problems with crashes. It's terribly slow to load. And it's significantly worse at syncing my Dell DJ. Blech.
