TradTunes Opens Less Than Auspiciously

The Celtic-music download store TradTunes (pre-launch blog entry here) has opened, underwhelmingly. The service is a bust in certain correctible ways:

  • Slim catalog. Perhaps it will fatten over time.

  • Low bitrates: "Music downloads that you purchase from Tradtunes.com are 128Kbps MP3 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. This is equivalent to CD quality." Yikes—that's an integrity-busting statement if there ever was one. Or a sign of cluelessness. Whichever, TradTunes is behind the curve on bitrate.

  • 64k 30-second stream clips. Hey, give us either the full song preview, or better-sounding 30-second previews. (And, by the way, the QuickTime preview links don't work on this machine. MP3 streams do work.)

  • Most albums cost $12.90. Some tracks even go above the typical 99 cents, to $1.29. For Pete's sake, this is Celtic music, for which there is hardly the sort of stampeding demand that would justify high prices.

  • Users must dump some money into a credit account before making any purchases. That initial deposit does not grant any improved service.

To its credit, TradTunes sells unwrapped music in plain MP3 or WMA (label's choice) format. But the store is competing with iTMS, which has better download prices, and Rhapsody, which has better streaming. My advice to participating artists and labels is to dump TradTunes and get into the bigtime services, because TradTunes isn't going to draw many customers.
