Breath of Fresh Air |
Cory Doctorow delivered an address to Microsoft's Research Group yesterday on the subject of DRM. It's a good, if long, read, in which Doctorow (who works for the EFF and also published a highly publicized sci-fi book which was offered as a free e-book concurrent with the physical publication) argues persuasively against DRM.
"Here's what I'm here to convince you of:
1. That DRM systems don't work
2. That DRM systems are bad for society
3. That DRM systems are bad for business
4. That DRM systems are bad for artists
5. That DRM is a bad business-move for MSFT"
It seems likely that none of the technologists in the room disagreed with Doctorow. DRM is an imperative mandated by record labels and other content companies. To the tech firms, content owners are good clients willing to pay top money for futile technology.
