Following up David's question, posted yesterday, I came across some news about how ARIA, the Australian Record Industry Association played with words trying to conceal record-breaking sales figures. Read for yourself some results:
-
Sales of Australian recordings have increased 26% over the last calendar year from an annual value of $115 million in 2002 to $145 million in 2003;
-
Although album sales volumes are up by 7.85%, the dollar value of those sales has only increased by 2.12% which illustrates a significant drop in wholesale unit pricing to retailers over the last year;
Jeremy Higgs points to an interesting analysis of the subject at Ars Technica.

1. Today BBC News has an article about 2003 sales numbers -- as reported by the IFPI.
